It 's part planned, part improvised journeys take
the band to places like progressive rock and break
core, it skims some hip hop and pimps that jazz, yet never stops
earballing its layout formula – the creature's creaking, limping,
erratic soul. While samplers and computer-editing help doing so on a
record, loop devices and effect batteries enable the band to do the
same thing on stage.
It's not easy to hear where a phrase comes from, who's spinning the
golden thread and where the latter is going.
Instead, the sound comes from the very bowels of the band and so you're
constantly in touch with the gist of it.
After having been around for 5 years, Formelwesen cut the cord from its
alma mater, the Berlin University of the Arts in 2007. In early '08 it
grew into a quartett, adding the bass clarinet/saxophone. Later the
same year, the band gained another two members, animator Nicolas de
Leval Jezierski and director and VJ Geis. They joined to extent the
Formelwesen tales onto screen and video. Live visuals create a strong
counterpart to the musicians' impressive stage presence while video
clips help spreading the word and bringing the Formelwesen experience
to your home screen: http://www.vimeo.com/4736063
